These are the two main factors that help your dryer perform its basic in some cases daily functions. Both need to be expelled through the dryer vent, poor venting will create poor drying times.

Heat

Heat is produced by the dryers heating element this heat is then channeled into the dryers drum.

Most newer dryers have what is known as a non resettable thermal fuse, this one time fuse often goes bad when a dryer vent is clogged. When this safety thermostat trips it means the dryer has overheated and more than likely is because the dryers vent is clogged. Replacing this fuse without cleaning the dryer vent will result in you replacing the fuse agin shortly.

On some of the older models without this safety fuse, poor or inadequate dryer venting will cause the dryer to cycle on the safety thermostat and not temperature control thermostat. This can cause an overheating and not drying properly complaint.

Moisture

Elimination of the moisture created by the heating of damp clothing. This moisture needs to vent. If the moisture is unable to vent because inadequate installation or clogged venting, the result is longer than normal run times and clothes still damp at the end of the cycle.

Dealing with an aftermath of a fire is not on your To-do list. Loss of all of your personal belongings is overwhelming to say the least. If your dryer vent shows any of the signs listed in this article call to schedule an appointment.

There are more than 15,000 dryer vent caused fire’s every year. Facts state that dryer vent related fires make up for over 90% of all appliance fires, more than a dozen deaths and 300 more reported injuries. Property damage is reported in the millions, nearly $100 million dollars. A yearly dryer vent inspection should be marked on your calendar at a minimum. We can come out and inspect your dryer vent system and let you know if the vent needs cleaned.

So what can you do to prevent a dryer vent fire? I have gathered the top warning signs as listed below.

- Timed cycle not drying in one load. (Excessive dry times, point directly to the dryer vent system) This sign means there is potentially excessive amount of lint build up inside your dryer.

-Automatic cycle stops before clothes are dry. (clothes still damp at end of cycle)

-You notice lint on your clothing. This means the vent could be blocked and the lint is being pushed back into the dryer.

-If you notice the top of your dryer is hot to the touch. This is a sure sign that the dryer is not venting the hot air outside. Hot air that doesn’t vent will cause a dryer’s top to be hotter than normal.

-Articles of clothing are hotter than normal. If you open the door and the clothes are to hot to touch you need a vent inspection.

-Burning smell. If you notice any kind of burning smell when your dryer is in use stop it immediately and call for service. (lint inside the dryer and or vent system could potential catch on fire)

-No lint visible on the lint screen. This is a sure sign the vent is clogged.

-Premature failure of the internal parts. If your motor or rollers needed replaced in a relatively short amount of time the dryer vent could have help caused the issue. Failure of the dryers internal parts are common in the appliance repair field.

Improper dryer venting will stop your dryer in its tracks, the cleaner your dryer vent is will help save money and possibly your life. Fire safety is number one in our book, cleaning your dryer vent and keeping your dryer vent safe is our goal.

The condenser coil on your refrigerator should be cleaned regularly,at least once a year. If you have animals, especially ones with long hair, they should be cleaned every six month. Cleaning your refrigerator condenser coils will save energy and ensure your refrigerator is running and cooling efficiently.

The most basic refrigerator condenser coil is called a (static) condenser. This is the style condenser that is located on the back side of the refrigerator. Static coils are cleaned easily with a rag and a vacuum, with brush attachment.

Some refrigerator condenser coils are located under the unit and are accessible from the kick plate,or back panel. With this style condenser it is best to use a refrigerator condenser coil brush. The brush works, most refrigerator coils are cleaned from the front, and space is narrow. The brush enables you clean the condenser coils easily, and effectively. If you are not able to access the coils from the front, and have to pull the unit forward, always use floor protection. A piece of masonite,or cardboard work well. I personally prefer Glide and guard floor protectors. Glide and guard floor protection snaps together which is nice if you want to roll,or push the appliance on the slider and not slide the protection across the floor.

Did you just find out your dryer vent is clogged, and that’s why your dryer isn’t heating correctly. Or have you just found out that lint makes it past the dryer’s lint filter, and can become lodged in the dryer vent. Having a routine dryer vent cleaning and inspection annually can and will save you money, and could possible save your life.

The single most important maintenance for any make or model dryer is a clean, and clear dryer vent exhaust system. If you knew that your dryer’s vent system was costing you money, and the reason you have purchased several dryers in the last few years, you would get your dryer vent cleaned. Many dryer failures are the results of an improperly maintained, and or installed dryer duct exhausts system.

This can,and does cause premature failure of your dryer’s components, not only does the dryer’s element, ignitor, and bearings but other major parts as well.

-To optimize and keep your dryer’s vent as clean as possible clean the lint filter after every load.

-When using the automatic cycle, wash and dryer article of clothing the same size. If you wash light and heavy things in the same load, the lighter articles will brush the sensor, and the dryer will shut down early.

-A drying rack is accompanied by most new dryer purchases. The rack enables you to use your dryer to dry caps, shoes, pillow, sweaters, and stuffed toys. Look in the use and care guide for your dryer for details.

-Flexible metal duct or ridged ducting is the only safe vent to install on your dryer. The white plastic vent hose is not only flammable,it also adds drying time to the cycle. The new periscope vent kits, work great in small laundry rooms and tight spaces, they allow the dryer to be pushed back several inches farther the normal dryer vent hose/kit.

Improper air flow or clogged dryer vent could have these results or ones similar

-Longer than normal dry times

-Squeaking or chirping noise (louder then normal)

-The automatic sensor does not shut the dryer off

- Failure of dryer heating parts (element/ignitor)

If your dryer vent is clogged and you have decided to install an indoor vent kit be warned. Combinations of heat and moisture will and does create mold, damage walls, ceilings, and can be harmfully to you personally.

Indoor dryer vent kits are not recommend, and our company does not recommend them. If you are using one for your dryer vent exhaust system make sure there is adequate ventilation.

There are several things that aid in the operation of a dryer. The most overlooked, and most important is the venting system. The dryer vent is where all the moisture from the clothes go to the outside. The average load holds almost eight pounds of water, this is a lot of water. If the venting is inadequate or clogged you will have poor drying results.

The heating function of the dryer is also important, most models have a one time non resettable fuse located on the rear or inside of the machine. If your dryer vent is clogged this fuse could possible trip and cause your dryer to not start. If a dryer does not vent the moisture and hot air outside, the cabinet and top could become very hot to the touch. Complaints such as dryer is very hot to the touch come into appliance repair dispatch center daily. Honest and reputable appliance repair firms will recommend you have a dryer vent cleaning specialist come to your home before their technician comes out. Most receptionist have a quick troubleshooting process set up for them to aid in first time completes.

Install your dryer vent so that it is as short as possible. Plastic dryer vent hose is flammable,if your dryer has plastic vent hose replace as soon as possible. Manufactures have come out with special elbows that fit behind your dryer, they provide a much cleaner and tighter install of the vent hose. Some styles require not vent hose at all,one side connesct to the wall, and the other to the dryer, this allows you to push the dryer back if you have a small laundry room.

Most dryers without a booster fan can vent around 20 feet, this is if your dryer vent is clean, and properly maintained. The aid of a booster fan may be necessary if you are not able to vent through an exterior wall,in which case you would have to go up through the attic. On long runs, longer then 20 feet, installing a booster fan may be necessary.

Every 90 deg elbow, equals three feet added to the run. Lets say you have a ten foot run, with one 90,your vent length would be thirteen feet. Cleaning the inside of your lint housing, along with the lint filter after every load, will keep excess lint from building up in your dryer exhaust system.

Did you know your dryer has to remove 8 pounds of water on a normal size load from the washer? How does it do this? By having proper air flow.

A dryer has to work overtime when you have an improper or restricted vent system. This is the venting inside your dryer, between the dryer and your external vent.

Dryers have trouble drying clothes due to several problems.

The internal vent system inside dryer is partially or fully plugged.

The vent hose between the dryer and wall can be smashed or too long.

The external vent system can be partially or fully plugged.

Most drying loads should take 30-50 minutes, any longer means a potential problem with ventilation or the dryer itself.

All of these items cause the dryer to work extra hard, but it also:

Uses more electricity and gas, making for higher utility bills.

The dryer runs longer, therefore wearing out most of the moving and some non-moving parts sooner, requiring unexpected repairs.

Back pressure on the vent causes internal parts to overheat, cracking belts, seizing motor bearings, burning heating elements, plus other parts are prematurely worn.

Despite these problems, the biggest problem for you and your home is actually a fire hazard!

Blocked vents or smashed vent hoses can cause temperatures inside the dryer and vent
system to reach fire hazard levels, potentially causing your home to burn down! If you have a white vinyl hose on the back of the dryer, this is a fire hazard.

Take these steps to avoid fires:

Most dryers should have their internal parts cleaned at least every 5 years.

White plastic vinyl should be changed immediately with a UL listed dryer vent hose.

The external vent system that runs up and out the roof or through your concrete foundation should be cleaned every 1 – 4 years.
